110 | 80. birthday party | Kjub Luxembourg With a new year new ideas are coming. If you follow my blog you know I'm terrible with sharing my work. Actually it asks some extra time and I'm short of it. Some of my recent work you can find on a clients page but most of it is simply delivered and forgotten. Doesn't matter if the client is a private person or an agency. In the second case is sharing even worse as I have to wait until it's published in magazine.

New year gave me an idea of sharing a few shoots right after uploading of files. Let's start with this idea :)

Following pictures were born at the 80th birthday party in the Kjub Luxembourg where after years a big family has again met. They invited myself to document it and create a present for a honoree - lovely lady.

0114-marian-majik-201501111554040114-marian-majik-20150111155404 I liked a huge window/glass wall which together with overcast weather outside produced a beautiful light. That's why I placed green chairs right opposite it. It was huge without any curtains so the light was soft but also directional and contrasty - compare to darker bar interior. 109 | TECH: Extremely sophisticated video rig Today's post is about forgotten creativity. My son - almost 7 years old is interested in video. He's got his second extremely cheap point and shoot camera in summer probably two years ago. I remember 'summer' well because my idea was to use it on holiday for some underwater shoots - what's never happened. It was 'second' one because I wasn't smart enough and bought zoomable camera first. After not completed 3 months it was unzoomable and unusable due - some detected 'lens error'. It's unbelievable what one can buy. You also know why it was cheapest too ;)

But back to the video. Two days ago Majko wanted to record his super jumps across living room. Asked for some tripod so I borrowed him a kind of gorillapod. Mine is this SLR version and I use it to fix flashes where I need - like doors, trees, bars, etc. To make a whole story shorter after 10 minutes he ended with this. If it looks to you like video 'shoulder' rig you're right. I don't have any of them at home and he never saw a real one. He just used 'something' as he told. I tested it and since then I'm a pinch bigger fan of video (I'm still much more a photographer) - I've just changed the camera to Canon G15. I like this small camera. It has some sand scratches on a front element - yes, I've taken it on holiday and used it on a beach intensively but it allows me to use rear wheal to adjust focal length quickly. Battery lasts long enough and RAW quality isn't the worst one. And video... it focus automatically - what my 5D3 can't...

I'm going to test it... and watch my kids more intensively ;)

108 | Adriana | Familly session | Luxembourg After long long time I have again a bit of time for blogging and sharing some of my pictures with you. If I look back at the actual year it was full of exciting shootings, new challenges and accomplished missions :) From exceptional weddings, trough lovely family sessions, shooting for media agency up to touches with magazine editors and publishing my pictures around the world. I would never expect it just five years back, never.
Next to all this things my blogging stayed quite. I try to be more active in following weeks and months.

Pictures which I'd like to share with you today are from a recent family session in Luxembourg. I've met Adriana, her husband and their two lovely kids at their place where we also took pictures. Ideas for outdoor shootings had to wait due not very nice weather conditions in a last few weeks. The family wish was to capture memories of sweet little girl since she is 2 years old and the youngest family member. In a March it's going to change :)

Have a nice weekend,

107 | TECH: Review of my light system Yongnuo YN-560 Mark III - Not expensive but well working - no need of extra receivers

I use these flashes for some time now. They're cheap, manual and powerful - in reverse order. I've used them in combination with RF603 wireless transmitter on my Canon 5DmkIII and I've found this system better working than Canon 580EX II with infrared controller controlled via camera menu. This is definitely cheaper solution so you can upgrade power for the same money (with buying 4-5 flashes instead one) and distance or obstacles between camera and flash don't matter anymore. With IR transmitter you have to also wait a bit until IR transmitter is charged for a next shoot - with this system you don't. If you need TTL system - check this solution: Yongnuo YN-622C

What I really like is that I don't need additional receivers and annoying batteries in them (they are usually AAA size). With standard set (2pcs) of RF603 you can fire flashes from two cameras at the 'same' time - great for workshops or work with shooting assistant. As a wedding photographer I've used it this way. Now I have YN-560TX - read bellow.

I've heard a bit negative words about buid quality but it's easy=inexpensive to replace them, they are lightweight and power control is EXCELLENT... plus mine copies are two years old without the smallest problem. Yongnuo YN560-TX Wireless Flash Controller - 5star remote to your YN-560 III

I've missed option to control output power remotely - but solution is here - and in the way I love. Plus it is as simple as using YN-560III flashes. Very intuitive and fast. You don't need to click many times to adjust power or turn dial wheel like on 580EXII - it was too slow for me.

It's a toy to set it, change any parameter and it never failed under any of my working conditions.
I had wireless trigger RF603 before - worked fine all it's life. Now they're updated by YN560TX.

Note: I didn't test firing flashes from two controllers with different settings but combination YN-560TX + RF603 works.

RoundFlash Dish Beauty Dish-Softbox 45 cm - Very very portable soft light but I like Firefly more.

Very very portable soft light but Firefly is better. Why? Check my review for Firefly II - 65cm version but in short 45cm diameter compare to 65cm is a big change.

Anyway it deserve 5 stars for portability and quality of produced light in a such small package. Design is too smart to be overlooked and price very reasonable.
Normally it pops up from it's yellow pocket, you zip the flash and it's done. Only improvement which I see is yellow pocket itself. If I can put my flash inside and hang it on my belt it'll be always with me. Maybe I have to search for another case because I can't fit it inside flash dedicated pouches and in my Thinktank lenschanger I have no more space left. I'm prime lenses shooter.

If you are for on the budget and looking for a small portable softlight source this is definitely one of the best options on the market nowadays.

Firefly II Beauty Box, silver, Ø 65 cm (FBO2 65) - Excellent small, portable soft light In the title is everything about how I use this softbox. I'm wedding, editorial and lifestyle photographer and I need good soft light which is very portable. Size of light source is important for good quality of light, right? There are some compromises here as I can't walk on my assignments with 120cm octabox or something even bigger. I need very portable setup.

Fortunately Firefly II gives me similar 'octabox' results with it's smart design. Front diffuser has added a silver reflector from inside - against creating strong hot spot in the middle of softbox and this looks ideal to me as I don't need instal another diffusion layer. Generally it's very easy and fast to build it up.

I wish to add just a small pocket on its bag - for extra batteries. But it's big enough to I put inside complete firefly + 2x flashes YN-560 III + wireless controller YN-560TX + monopod as light holder/stand.

To anybody looking for well designed, well made, extremely portable soft light source - buy this one. Jinbei M-1 Profi Aluminium light stand 132cm to 395cm - Superb 'C-stand'

I don't have a studio but I need some strong light-stand on a set from time to time. My criteria were solid build, usage as normal stativ, the best if it's compact - avoid problems with transport and bags. This isn't the lightweight solution but it's very very solid. I've found a bag long enough to fit it in, plus it came with some bags for additional weight.

So this is my winner and I'm very happy with this choice. I have also some manfrotto's but I love this one more.

Delamax 5in1 Faltreflektoren Set - 107cm Ø - gold, silber, schwarz, weiß und Diffusor - Briliant reflector.

I love this pieces of fabric. There are million ways of use a reflector for a photographer so if you are looking for one solid which can last you forever buy this one. Is well made, size is 'medium' = which I use the most for indoor and outdoor portraits. I have also a bigger 1x2m one but it's too big and heavier but smaller ones don't produce enough of light or the light quality is not as good as from this size. Simply they are too small.

That's all for today. Have a nice time,

105 | Wedding: Pascale & Gilles | Chateau de Bourglingster, Luxembourg I’ve promised to return and publish some weddings from last year. It looks that my biggest problem was to decide which one to start with so I closed my eyes and… here we are! Pascale and Gilles. Great! Flashlights in my memory say – beautiful charismatic bride, happy groom, first look, wonderful sunny summer day, scouts, balloons, chateau (or a small castle if you wish), DJ, relax and perfect organisation… but let’s go back to the beginning. I’ll try to be your guide :)

It’s the middle of July. Hot, beautiful and a sunny day as brides are used to dreaming of. I’m driving my car to Pascale’s parents’ house located in Steinsel hills surrounded with a well maintained rose garden and a beautiful view over the valley… I show up on time and Pascale is arriving with her hair and make-up perfectly done. Although we’ve met several times before (engagement session) I didn’t expect such a huge change. Everything is nailed perfectly so it’s up to us to create memories…

The story continues below but let me show here the vendor list. They’ve all got 5 stars rating from the bride. For their amazing work they deserve it for sure!

Hairdresser: Monique&Louisa Hair Design | Luxembourg | 22 11 75
Make-up artist: Paris 8 | Luxembourg | 46 40 20 07 01
DJ: Gilles Heinesch | Luxembourg
Catering: Château de Bourglinster | Bourglingster | 78 78 78-50

Car decoration: Fleurs Kill | Luxembourg-Howald | 48 15 35
Dress: Maison Felgen | Esch sur Alzette | 53 12 85

As I’ve mentioned the engagement session already happened. Small surprise for me there is a Guest book- the one in ladies hands.  As you can see it is worth to invest some time to do it. Not all couples have a book full of nice pictures with warm wishes from their best friends at the end…

Are you familiar with ‘First Look’ sessions?
Maybe not, so I’ll explain it a bit deeper. Honestly, the most interesting part of the day are couple portraits for many of us. The truth is that many times we are hired just because of them and ‘the magic’ we can do… but… many times, a wedding schedule is so tight and we end up with a few minutes to work with. Pity, sure. Fortunately there are some solutions. And one of them are portraits taken before the ceremony – ‘First Look’ sessions.

Why are they my preferred way of work?  There is no pressure no other witnesses just the couple full of love in an almost private space and then… emotions can fly. The groom is waiting (isn’t it a good training for life ;) his imagination works at its maximum, the bride is coming from behind, she is smiling, she wants to see his first reaction, she was waiting so long for it and now it’s here. Finally… and at the same time memory cards save these beautiful memories. Is it worth to create them, what’s your opinion?

…on a way across the square of Abbey a lady stopped the bride and asked her something. In a following minutes we walked in a gallery and had that beautiful space just for us. Thank you again madam!

Meantime… guests in front of city hall…

Done… lifetime party can start now.
From Luxembourg city hall we moved 20km to the east-west. There is a small village named Bourlingster with it’s picturesque chateau. And this chateau hosted the cocktail and the wedding party… It sounds simple but not everything is so easy to access. Imagine some young scouts made their camp exactly on a castle’s bridge. We need to pass… Sorry, what?! We have to pay? And drink? What a life! :)

Done… so let’s go in and have some fun. Btw Gilles is member of a Scout’s club (LGS Miersch) and he survives everywhere – he has one amazing helper comparable to MacGyver. Pascale. As a member of a Karate club she keeps them secure during their journeys… don’t touch. Explosive!

marian-majik-20130712173454-wedding-bourglingster.jpg marian-majik-20130712173227-wedding-bourglingster.jpg

do you find the ten differences?

Friends from both clubs prepared several difficult tasks. This one was a bit smelling: Can you prepare tramp’s Pop-Corn?  Another were: fitting into a sleeping bag, famous karate kid – break the wood, climb and catch a flag, and more…

During the cocktail  each guest wrote a message on a card and balloons took them to the world. I have to as how many responses they’ve got back…

…a few balloons unloaded with several cards couldn’t fly…

THE MEAL – if you plan your event and you’re looking for some really EXCELLENT kitchen… this one was really really WAW!!! They completely dominated my favorite list in each category. At the moment they’re still no.1 …I hope it says a lot – if not check other locations where I shoot this year you’ll see with whom I compare.

Two Chefs.

DJ Gilles Heinesch falls into same category – ask him.

Good moment… :)  Guess what she is doing?!…….. first dance is starting guys: RUN FORREST RUN! :DDD
With the time remaining we went to take the last guest portraits and… changes keep life fresh ;)

104 | Family session: Milk teeth | Luxembourg This cute family belongs to Veronika. She asked me to take a few pictures to remember smiles of their children until they have milk teeth. Parents know the best how fast time can fly. Especially mothers… So I’ve visited them at the end of January and we tried to accomplish a mission. They all were simply amazing. Natural, spontaneous, in a great mood – just photographer’s dream. Partly it’s because Dim is also a very good photographer so you can guess who are his best models. I could see it on their walls so he is one who takes is further many of us. Don’t you have often a full hard-drive too? Then files go to archive drives with a hope – ones I’ll do it. Familiar? Then new/better pictures come, we are excited and some great ones stays in ’0/1 world’ forever. From one moment I’ve started to print and make books for myself. More accurate – my wife started, I’ve just done it…

And what is a post without pictures? Nothing, right? …so here are some:

103 | First post in 2014 Hello Everyone! It’s unbelievable but it takes me one full year to come back. Wild internet waves and half, or more accurate  3/4 of my site doesn’t work anymore, galleries are death with no updates, crossed links, broken WordPress templates, etc. Where I was? Did I live on this planet? Did I shoot some pictures? Am I still alive? Really?!
Oh yes, here is what I’ve done during the last 12 months and why my virtual voice was so quite:
It started innocently … we ‘ve bought a small house. Is that good reason for dissapearing?

Not the worse so let’s call it our reconstruction adventure. Started in April finished… probably in a next life. Of course as many of you know, the rent plus loan at the same time isn’t the best combination so we officialy finished it in August and moved in. Finishing touches and small works will continue till the summer-at least. But definitely  I’ll have more of time for my kids, wife and barbeque in the garden this summer.
And weddings? Did I shoot some of them? NOT some but many, many of them. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to publish them but believe me I’ve seen amazing moments, met beautiful people and captured many shoots  I’m proud of. I’ll bring some of them in following posts… time to be excited; )
I’ve decided to continue with workshops too… I’ll bring dates at the end of this week after our family vote. It was such a pleasure to share my experiences that I simply have to continue. Btw. if there is something I can help you with let me know. I still receive clients’ inquiries every week so hopefully the Contact page works.
Have a great time!

102 | Family session in Mersch At the end of the last year I’ve supported a SLOVAK STAND for charity project within International bazar Luxembourg. The winner of an GIFT VOUCHER with portrait session was a following family… and that’s the start of today’s story.

We had luck for sunny Sunday what is really, really exceptional in Luxembourg. At least, last few weeks were rainy and cold. They decided for a family walk in a park in a small town – Mersch, located a bit northerly from Luxembourg city. They brought an excellent mood and a lot of smiles so I really enjoyed that late morning. As you can see they are gifted by two adorable daughters…

Btw. I specially love black and white versions. Please enjoy and share them with your friends…

97 | Personal: ReLaunch I’m back! After looooong time I’ve finished transferring my blog and website into one manageable place. To be honest – almost finished – but it means that I’ve found extra time for blogging and posting my work. Let’s start with that!

First short summary what happened or I did the few last months? I’ve learnt – plenty, plenty and plenty of useful stuff because being a professional photographer asks much more than just to be good (great or exceptional…) at taking pictures. These skills are simple basics and I know plenty of amazing photographers living their normal life as bakers, administrators, accountants, shop keepers, teachers, architects… you too, right? So why this dream job isn’t for everyone? …maybe: Who will pay us then :) ?!

Luxembourg children photographer

We all enjoy process of taking pictures more than processing them, delivering to clients, keeping archives and portfolios, looking for suitable suppliers and long-lasting products, dealing with nightmare named marketing and keeping alive our small businesses. Who wants to hear about copyrights, permits, model releases, contracts and other boring but non-erasable parts of photography business? We try to find solutions, satisfy and help our clients, friends, families… and we succeed or fail all the time. Friends ask me about my beginnings in hope to hear about easy and smooth process. No, it was pain in my… but it’s my love and dreams :) Or do you really believe it can be easy? Sorry for stolen dreams, it’s a lot, lot, lot of bloody work behind curtains. Now, when I see emails from photographers who want to assist me it always reminds me of the times when I wrote similar ones without any respond whatsoever. This is real world. But don’t worry, if I could follow my dreams you can too and if I can help you I’ll do it.

Based on Jared Platt’s CreativeLive Ultimate Lightroom workflow course I’ve improved my archives, working drives and I’ve created complete new portfolio drive. If you have 2000 favorites every year (that means after hard-hard selection) and you need to find them immediately – for brides on the meeting, commercial clients, agencies, other photographers or friends… this is only working way. Of course it’s slow process to go over hundreds folders (I keep my files organized by dates) but at the end after selection, keywording and re-publishing this aim of each photographer comes true. Highly recommended to all Lightroom users! The rest of digital photographers could adapt organization of files for a really clean workflow. My no.1 in have to see list for busy photographers.

Another priceless resource is Chase Jarvis (apart from others, one of the guys behind CreativeLive). His interview with Ramit Sethi stopped me for a while. They are talking about rates, work and improvement.

Of course next to learning, cleaning hard drives, collecting, selecting, marking, keywording I had several amazing lifestyle and family sessions at the end of the year. I’ve met interesting people so I’d love to share some moments with you – in a next post.

94 | Wedding: Tina and Pascual, Differdange & Esch sur Alzette Tina loves children so she has chosen life of a teacher. On the Pascual side his passion for nice cars brought him into Audi team in Esch. They are both Luxembourgish but with her Portuguese roots and his veins filled Spanish blood there is enough sun in their lives. This combination of Southern temperaments makes a perfect couple from them.

Their day started for me with preparations in a beautiful apartment of bride’s sister. A lot of space, green terrace, unusual house walls and nice color combinations are providing very friendly living space. And because temperature climbed up over 35 degrees in a shade I had nice strong contrast in pictures. Could I wish more?

At the Commune of Differdange were another tree weddings that day so I’ve seen one of the fastest ceremony in my life. Saved time they used for longer fun. All loved it!

The whole Tina’s life is connected with city of Differdange. She grew up there so she has beautiful memories from childhood to this place. Especially the known park with the flower clock will stay in her heart forever. That’s why it was the best place for couple portraits too.

Reception was at Casino Club in Differdange. I felt in love with that place. Outstanding food, stylish premises and beautiful big windows as a bonus for a photographer. Heaven or…? We also did a few guests portraits in low sundown light which belong to my favorites. And then party could start. In Brasserie K116 in Esch’s Kulturfabrik. If you are thinking about party in this part of Luxembourg – there is no better space. And don’t forget to check DJ he provided the right atmosphere to the party. I think pictures will tell more than my words…

93 | Wedding: Martine and Peter They are living in London. The city with so many famous places, Queen and unique foggy days.
Martine was studying in famous Oxford when she met Peter. After eight years which they’ve spent covered by wings of love she answered: Yes, I do. Their wedding story could start…

Everyday on the way to the work Martine passes a wedding store window located just a few meters next to their apartment in London. From there she brought a decent light wedding dress completely covered by embroidery to their parents house in Luxembourg. Together with a beautiful pearl necklace and simple white shoes the dress enhanced lines of the bride. Simpleness is the choice of queens.

Unique Aston Martin with simple strong lines took her to the kingdom of charismatic priest and beautiful voices of choral singers in St Michael’s Church in Mondorf les Bains. The ceremony was hold in Luxembourgish and English. Yes, Peter is English as classic Double-Decker bus which brought their wedding guests to the place.

Afterwards we went to Orangerie in famous Mondorf’s Spa Resort. There is a vast park full of greenery, flowers, old autumn threes, statues and little lakes around. Quite and romantic place ideal for wedding receptions as was this one. Orangerie itself has a beautiful huge sun-filled windows which I liked from a first seen. This place worth to be seen if you are planning your wedding.

The life is romantic and tender if you are as Martine and Peter. Thank you for an opportunity to capture so beautiful moments. Much love and appreciation…
